Cheap Summer Travel Tips from an Insider

I am often asked by anyone who knows I work for a travel company if I have any “insider” tips on ways to save money on travel. Especially with the tough economy, people are asking now more than ever for ways they can still take a great summer vacation, but without the large bill.

Here are some tips from an insider on ways to save money on your summer travel:

Check on Free Stopovers – I did an interview with The Wall Street Journal a few weeks ago and mentioned that on some flights, you can schedule free stopovers. It’s like getting two destinations for the price of one. Take advantage of it if your flight allows.

Shop at Grocery Stores – Foreign grocery stores are a cultural experience all my themselves.

Visiting one is a peek into daily local life and it’s cheap.  Stock up on essentials for sandwiches and snacks to save money on meals. If you fancy yourself a bit like Gordon Ramsey, don’t forget to take advantage of hostel kitchens and cook meals.

Be Wise When It Comes to Currency Exchange – If you have an ISIC, currency exchange is free at Travelex locations, which are at most major airports. When you’re out and about, try to exchange currency at a bank, which usually will offer a better conversion rate with a smaller commission charge. Avoid shady booths without a reputable name.

Check the Hostel Message Board – Hostel message boards are designed with budget travelers in mind, so check them out for free – or nearly free – activities. I took Scottish dance lessons at a big London hostel for free and it was so much fun.

Fill Up at Breakfast – If you’re at a buffet or continental breakfast in the morning, snag a few rolls and jam packets or other food items you can easily carry with you. It will make for a cheap snack later in the day and most hostels and hotels won’t bat an eye as long as you aren’t grabbing a dozen.

These may not be huge savings individually, but when you consider the exchange rate and the overall cost of your trip, you could end up shaving a few hundred dollars off of your trip with just a few small adjustments.

  3. Stephen,

Your best bet is to work with your travel agent as it depends on the specific route and airline.
