Alcohol Facts From Around the World

Drink, Drank, Drunk. Still feeling the effects of spring break? No? Then I guess It’s time for some interesting alcohol facts from around the globe:

1) The word “toast,” which means wishing good health originated in ancient Rome. A piece of toasted bread was literally dropped into wine back then.

2) The soil of one of the vineyards in France is considered so precious that it is mandatory for workers to scrape the soil cheersoff their shoes before they leave.

3) Here is a little surprise (especially with our weak ranking): The national anthem of United States “The Star Spangled Banner,” was written to the tune of a drinking song.

4) The pressure in a champagne bottle is 90 pounds per square inch: three times the pressure in automobile tires.

5) Adolf Hitler was one of the world’s best known abstainers from alcohol.

6) The longest permanent bar is 405 feet and 10 inches is located in Ohio. Although, some suggest that the longest bar is in Illinois, which is 684 feet… Google it. I think it’s a myth.

7) The world’s oldest known recipe is for beer.

8) It is illegal to feed alcohol to moose in Alaska and fish in Ohio.

9) Many high school cafeterias in Europe serve alcohol to students who choose to drink

10) Texas state law prohibits taking more than three sips of beer at a time while standing. Does this count?

  1. Perhaps something worth mentioning is that George Washington had the largest whiskey distillery in 18th-century America! Mount Vernon has reconstructed it and it’s open to the public April – October. Check out this blog to see how experts made whiskey in the reproduction stills this past Feb (and check back with Mount Vernon in June when the rye spirit goes on sale!) http://www.makinggeorgewashingtonswhiskey.blogspot.com
