Your Guide to Visiting Australia: Ninja Kangaroos Edition

Posted on March 11, 2009 by Patrick Evans - Marketing Communications Coordinator

I was going to write about New Zealand today, but due to the great response we got from yesterday’s Australia suggestions, I’ve decided to do a little investigative work on your suggestions for another post.

First on the list though, we have a warning. Watch out for ninja kangaroos.

A family in a suburban Canberra house was jolted from their restful sleep by a giantkangaroo-relaxing kangaroo that either jumped the gun on their world domination plan or was possibly – and likely more logically – just scared when it was trapped in the backyard.

“I thought it was a lunatic ninja coming at us through the window,” said the man who wrestled the house-wrecking beast to the ground.

On to the recommendations…

Food

Mollie says we need to check out Pancakes on the Rocks in Sydney. I don’t even know what the picture is of on their Facebook page, but it looks delicious.

Destinations

Leyla recommends Manly Beach, which – judging by the pictures – does accommodate both men and women. And after you hit the beach, Leyla recommends scaling a few “hills” in the breathtaking Blue Mountains.

Alisa suggests the outback – specifically Ayers Rock and Coober Pedy.  Coober Pedy is the opal capital of the world and Ayers Rock is a giant rock formation that looks pretty awesome at sunset.

Stuff to Do

Leyla’s choice of entertainment is a favorite in my book, no matter the location – the zoo. I recommend checking out the Taronga Zoo, which is the nation’s leading zoological garden.

Ellen Johns gives a great recommendation for Leconfield Jackaroo and Jillaroo School. You learn to be a real ranch hand in the outback, like that bloke who plays one in that really famous movie.

  1. Steve Irwin’s ‘Australia Zoo’ is probably the best zoo I have ever been to in the world. It is located in Queensland and although most tourists stay at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, you can book day trips that take you by coach to the zoo. You also get a spectacular view of the Glasshouse Mountains while heading up. You can get amazing photos taken holding koalas/snakes etc and frolic through open range pits of kangaroos which you can hand feed. Definitely worth the money to spend the day there.

Bondi Beach is a popular hot spot if in New South Wales. It is common to spot a celebrity or two while there. Again, easily accessible via public transport from Sydney.

One of my most favourite days spent was snorkeling through the Tangalooma Ship Wrecks off the coast of Moreton Island in Queensland. This is two hours away from Brisbane and there are many ferry day trips to the island and also accommodation available there. The waters are crystal clear and the sand, a fine yellow dust. Dolphin watching and boom-netting was also a fun experience while spending the day on the island. The Scooby Doo movie with Sarah Michelle Gellar was actually filmed on Moreton Island.

If you’re into sampling cuisines from right around the world, Melbourne is the place to be. Possibly one of the most multicultural cities I have ever been to (it’s actually my home town), when in the city, you can pretty much sample any kind of food your heart desires within a 1km radius. Mexican, Indian, Thai, American, Aussie, Korean, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese… you name it, Melbourne has some of the best food in the world!

Melbourne is also great if you are into good shopping. It’s know as the shopping capital of Australia and it surely doesn’t disappoint. If you’re into Markets and good bargains, Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market is definitely the place to visit! I may be bias, but Melbourne is one of my favourite cities in the entire world. It’s a mix of old and new and is big on the arts and architecture.
